The National Book Development Board in partnership with The Deparment of Education and The DepEd Library Hub had successfully conducted the Booklatan sa Bayan program in Tacloban City and Palo Leyte on August 27 and 28, 2014. NBDB visited two schools in Leyte: San Fernando Elementary School in Tacloban City and San Joaquin Elementary School in Palo Leyte. Over 300 students, teachers, librarians and supervisors participated in the event.

Highlighting the theme “Rebuilding a Library, Rebuilding the Community” of this Booklatan project, a formal turnover of books from the NBDB to the DepEd Library Hub in Leyte happened during the morning session then followed by a Copyright 101 discussion was facilitated by NBDB Director Wilfred Castillo. Interesting questions from teachers and supervisors were raised during the talk and an exciting exchanged of ideas occurred.

Two seminars for students were conducted in the afternoon session. Writers Daryll Delgado and Beverly Siy facilitated the writing workshop. Students were taught how to write haikus and were given tips and advice on how to write effectively. Active student participation made the discussion fun and dynamic.

Parallel to the seminars for students were the two discussions for teachers and librarians. Children’s Literature Association of the Philippines, Inc. (CLAPI) President Leonila Galvez discussed on how to formulate a book club and other ways to increase readership while School Principal Delia Serrano, facilitated a workshop on how to develop a reading community.
The Booklatan project showed useful information intended to help rebuild and strengthen schools and libraries in Leyte.
