THE BOOK CLUB WITH ICE SEGUERRA: EMILIANA KAMPILAN’S “DEAD BALAGTAS”

For our second book this August on The Book Club with Ice Seguerra, we are reading “Dead Balagtas, Tomo 1: Mga Sayaw ng Dagat at Lupa.”

Written and illustrated by Emiliana Kampilan, “Dead Balagtas” is a first-of-its-kind sprawling epic about the history of the Philippines. Told in a series of four stories touching on love, culture, class, and identity, beginning with the creation of the universe as born out of the love between Tungkung Langit and Laon Sina, this progressive graphic novel weaves historical fact, science, humor, and insight to create narratives about how our modern lives are linked to the past.
